TIME TO SHOW EVERYONE WHAT HARPER IS REALLY ABOUT... AND SEALS
Hello again everyone. It's time for another one of my rants on all things politics. There has been a lot in the news recently worth mentioning that I don't even know where to start. The House of Commons is set to reconvene on April 3rd with a Conservative government for the first time in 13 years. We are all anticipating what will come of this Harper-led minority government and if it will be able to operate through many of the obstacles that it is bound to face. The Speech from the Throne will be the first test for the new government. For those of you that don't know what the Speech from the Throne is it is basically an outline of what the new government wants to accomplish in this session of parliament and it is read by the Governor General. It is then voted on and hopefully it should be passed. The vote on the throne speech is considered a confidence vote whereby if the speech is not passed the government fails and we will be back to another election. The last Speech from the Throne from Paul Martin after the 2004 election was the only throne speech to be amended in Canadian history after Harper and the Conservatives forced the Liberals to amend the speech in turn for Conservative support on the speech. I've already said that there is no party that wants another election anytime soon so I don't see the throne speech in any grave danger. The Liberals will probably vote against it just out of principle but other than that it should pass just fine. Many of Harper's campaign promises should be included in the throne speech such as the cut on GST, child-care changes, and gun control.
We will finally be able to see what a Conservative government can do for this government and all of the people fearing Stephen Harper will realize that he is needed to be our leader so we can have some change from the 13 year Liberal dynasty that has been ruling our country. The Liberals have said that the Conservatives should not count on them for support in the new Parliament. Interim Liberal leader Bill Graham has taken a pretty strong stance against Harper for a party who doesn't even have a leader. Last weekend the President of the Liberal Party announced the plans for the Liberal Leadership Convention which will be held on the weekend of Dec. 2-3. So for all of you who thought Harper wouldn't last a year as Prime Minister it is pretty safe to say you are going to be wrong. If the only other party capable of leadership in this country won't even have a leader until December that means it will be at least 2007 before an election is really even feasable. And currently as of right now the only people who have officially thrown their name into the hat for leadership of this recouperating party is Martha Hall Findlay, a fiscally conservative, socially progressive person hoping to bring together the Martin and Chretien supporters and create unity in the party; and John Godfrey, who hopes to puch environmental sustainability, child-care, and social justice. When I mention these two names you are probably thinking the same thing I did when I heard them, "Who?"
There have been plenty of big names that have said they won't be running such as Frank McKenna, Alan Rock, and John Manley and there are plenty of big names that have yet to announce their candidacy such as Belinda Stronach but they haven't come forward yet. The race doesn't officially begin until April 7th and the last day to enter isn't until September 30th so these people have plenty of time to put their names forward.
Apparently the seal hunt debate is still going on for some unknown reason. Some 71-year old actress from France, Brigitte Bardot, has joined on with the McCartney's in their ignorance in protesting the annual harp seal hunt. One of the founders of Greenpeace has forwarded on a petition on 25,000 signatures to the Canadian government to stop the seal hunt. And this list is most likely a bunch of people who don't know anything about the issue and have been fed misled information just like Paul McCartney. Thankfully Stephen Harper and Minister of Fisheries and Oceans Loyola Hearn declined to speak to Bardot. Amazingly Watson, the Greenpeace guy, said that we should not have a Fisheries and Oceans Minister from Newfoundland so that they can take an 'objective' look at this. Yes, this makes perfect sense. Let's make an MP from Saskatchewan, a province that is nowhere near an ocean, the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans so they can have an objective look. And no, it doesn't make sense that an MP from the province that has historically made the bulk of its revenue from the ocean the MINISTER OF FISHERIES AND OCEANS. Where do these people come from?
Anyway, that's all for now. I'm sure to have more once the government reconvenes in Parliament and maybe even before that if this stupid seal thing is still bubbling.

Comments
I randomly checked this tonight, and was so glad to see you habe posted recently.
My friend, Renee, who works as a page at the House of Commons is SO EXCITED to be back. She is skipping her whole day of class on the third to be in there, she can't wait.
As well, I know in technicalities, Harper has been the prime minister since the election in January, however, I am viewing his real "Leadership" status to take over on April the third. So... eighteen months from April (What is that... September 2007??) We will probably be facing another election.
You love talking about the seal hunt.
I don't really have a huge opinion on the seal hunt, but, I do know that Newfoundland and Labrador have the highest unemployment rate across Canada, and if you were to take the seal hunt away from them, you would see the percentages of unemployment is this province steadily increasing.
I feel bad for Newfoundlanders because they have always relied so heavily on jobs that now being proven to them are very easily replaced by machinery. I feel like we need to cut Newfoundland a little slack.
I think Paul McCartney should set up a huge fund to give to the people of Newfoundland, and pay them double what they make during the seal hunt. Then, people will stop hunting seals.
Have you ever seen the PETA video about how KFC kills chickens? If we showed that to everyone in the world, I am certain only a very small portion would stop eating KFC. It is cruelty to animals, all in all... but, when it all comes down to it, we are only human, and we fight on our "animal" instinct. And that is to eat. Large amounts of meat. Including KFC. And seal. Also, 25,000 out of the 6 billion people on the earth is a miniscually small percentage. Like, seriously, it's so small that my calculator gave me an unprocessable number... 4.0999e-9 or something weird like that. The point is... the seal hunt will ALWAYS be there. Paul McCartney is wasting his time, his breath, and our patience.
We should write him an angry protest letter asking him to please stop bugging us.
Ahahah. I'll see you soon, D-Mack
You are strange.
Love, Kelly
Also, I don't know where Amanda is getting her Newfoundland ideas from.
And finally, I'm glad to see that your posts have a bit more bite to them now. Granted, this is being posted 5 years after the fact...
