Well the first full week of school has begun and those glorious "syllabus days" are over. You know, the part where the classes actually last more than twenty minutes and there are actual lectures and reading and such. Legal Thinking and Canadian Political Parties look promising to me and my other classes will suffice. I find it hilarious that it is only the third day of school and already there are people swarming around the computers in the DAL library. My favourite two movies out right now are still Invincible and The Illusionist and are what I continue to recommend to people who ask me, "Should I go see The Covenant or The Protector?" Anyways, on to more pressing matters.
Over the weekend the NDP held a national party convention in Quebec where Jack Layton maintained a 92% approval rating from the party. I have two comments about this one little fact. It makes sense that his rating is so high just by the NDP's showing in the last election under his leadership. NDP support hasn't been this high since the days of Ed Broadbent back in the late 80's. The other thing that I wanted to mention is that while NDP support continues to rise and Jack Layton's support by his fellow NDPer's is also overwhelmingly high do you really picture in your mind Jack Layton as the leader of this country. I think if Kayton became prime minister I might just pack up my bags and leave for a while until Canada came to its senses. It's not the proposition of the NDP forming our government that scares me but the fact that Layton will be PM. Being the conservative that I am you might think that I would have great distaste for the NDP but in truth I favour them much more than the Liberals and I always have. I'm glad that the NDP gained more seats in the last election, I just would have preferred them stealing Liberals seats rather than Conservative.
There are a few things that Layton has been talking about over the weekend at the NDP convention that I feel the need to address. Layton feels the need that Canada should pull its troops out of Afghanistan right away. Just for that I will label Jack Layton as the Bonehead of the Day... more on this to follow. The party voted 90% in favour of this bonehead idea. Well I guess it's a good thing that they aren't forming the government then. This isn't like the situation that the US faces with Iraq, they didn't go into Afghanistan under false pretenses. They knew why they were going in and they are doing what they planned on doing. Just for the record, I am in favour of the Harper's extension in Afghanistan and I believe that we should stay there until the job is done.
The other bonehead remark that Layton said over the weekend was that Stephen Harper is a cheerleader for George Bush because of our situation in Afghanistan and the softwood lumber dispute. I'm just going to use this chance to point out that the softwood lumber dispute is n longer a dispute and now an agreement because Stephen Harper and the Conservatives were able to make a deal with the US, unlike the Liberals were able to do, and they were able to take a harder stance with the US than the Liberals were doing. So what does that tell you? They were able to make a deal when the Liberals couldn't and they were putting up more of a fight than the Liberals did too.
Not only would I like to point out that Jack Layton is a bonehead for the comments that he made over the weekend and in general but he is also today's Bonehead of the Day. Please refer your eyes above to the political cartoon that I have chosen to represent Layton's reign as Bonehead of the Day.
