I'm on a roll here today with my fourth rant of the day. For those of you keeping score out there that means I've had more posts today than in the last 6 months. Maybe I'm starting a new trend or something, for myself anyway. I just got out of my Comparative Politics class and I've now determined that I will have no shortage of material for my ranting. But my rant today has nothing to do with comparative politics because I just read an article that makes me less than happy. Almost to the point where I would want to rant about it, now if only I had something in which to share my rant... wait a minute.
I don't know if any of who are aware but when Pope John Paul II died a little while back and the process of electing a new pope began I was in favour of Joseph Ratzinger and was happy when he was elected Pope Benedict XIV. Not that I'm Catholic or anything, I just have an opinion in these matters. Anyway, all praise I had for Benedict is now gone because of what he said today about Canada.
Maybe I will start a new feature here called Bonehead of the Day or Week or something but today the Pope is the Bonehead of the Day. That's right, I just called the Pope a bonehead. If you don't hear from me tomorrow then this is why. What did the Pope say you might ask? Well, he slammed our country today for permitting things like same-sex marriage and abortion saying, "In the name of tolerance, your country had had to endure the folly of the redefinition of spouse," and "In the name of freedom of choice, it is confronted with the daily destruction of unborn children."
What horrible things those freedoms of choice and tolerance. We all have our own opinions about these two highly controversial topics and we chose whether to express them or not. I do not respect the Pope for slamming our country for "permitting" these things to happen. I know many of you thought that when Stephen Harper and the Conservatives were elected that there would be an end to same-sex marriage and abortion but you should all now know that this is not the case. Harper has made it clear that abortion is not an issue and is not out to end same-sex marriage. The only thing he will do, and I am in favour of, is to reopen the issue of same-sex marriage... if it was ever closed. He wants to have a free vote on same-sex marriage instead of the Liberal led party-vote that allowed same-sex marriage before. This way MP's will be able to vote on their own conscience and on behalf of their constituents instead of voting along party lines like last time. If they vote for same-sex marriage then so be it, but at least this time it will be a true vote.
Personally, I may be against same-sex marriage and certain types of abortion but if the government votes one way or another I will respect their decision even if I don't like it. This is why I am happy to live in a secular society where religion and the church no longer have any influence in the decisions of the government. So that statements by the Pope have no conequences here.
