COALITION GOVERNMENT IN THE WORKS?

Yesterday, federal Finance Minister Jim Falherty released a fiscal update regarding Canada's approach to the international financial crisis. All opposition parties, Liberals, NDP and the Bloc, are vehemently opposed to the update and have all vowed to vote against it when it comes to that. And unlike during the last parliamentary session where Liberals would be absent for votes so that the legislation would pass they are saying the will show up in full force and if it means bringing down the government then so be it.
Layton, Dion, and Duceppe have all stated they will vote against the current update unless serious changes are made to it and the Conservatives are staying strong and won't back down. So what does this mean? It means that if the update is voted down, it will be considered a confidence motion and the Conservative minority government will no longer have the support of the House of Commons and can no longer be the government.
This does not necessarily mean that we will be headed into another election. Basically, if the government loses the confidence of the House of Commons then the Governor-General will ask the opposition parties if they are able to form a government either through coalition or other means. This is a very rare occurence and usually it leads to election. However, there are reports that former Liberal prime minister Jean Chretien and former NDP leader Ed Broadbent are in meetings right now discussing a possible coalition between Dion's Liberals and Layton's NDP.
The other question here is regarding the Liberal leadership race. Right now the three front runners are current leader Stephane Dion, and leadership hopefuls Bob Rae and Michael Ignatieff. They are also in meetings with Chretien and Broadbent to figure out a leader instead of waiting for the leadership convention in May.
So depending on the outcomes of these meetings we may either see ourselves headed for another election, we may see Harper and the Conservatives lose power and a coalition government between the Liberals and the NDP take over, or we may see the opposition parties back down and Harper passing the fiscal update.
More to come...

BACK FROM ANOTHR HIATUS: OVERVIEW

It has been an atroceous three months since my last posting. I apologise for this and offer up no excuse for my absense from this place. I had final exams to worry about, and work of course but nothing that could have prevented me from posting a little more often then every three months. And now I'm two and a half months into a five month long summer with no reason not to do this so here I am. So what has happened since March 23rd that deserves honourable mention on my beloved post. Well the World Cup is currently entering the 2nd round of competition and I know what you might be thinking: who cares about soccer? It's a funny thing the World Cup, it is like nothing else. Even people who never watch or follow soccer of any form seem to find themselves entangled in the World Cup whenever it comes around. While it is the most popular sport in the entire world it is not as popular in North America where we're more focused on hockey, football, baseball, basketball, and golf. And...
BACK FROM MY RANTING HIATUS It's been awhile since the last time I posted a rant on here and for that I apologize. Of course there are reasons behind my procrastination. Spring break, lots of birthdays, school, and work have all thrown their hats at me in recent weeks but now I am back... and better than ever. Today's rant will not have a specific focus other than catching up for both you and I on Canada's and the rest of the world's events. And what a busy couple of weeks it has been. There have been numerous international, national, and provincial headlines that have caused some serious controversy, change, and reaction from all over. So I will not procrastinate any longer and get right into it. The David Emerson appointment and crossing of the floor still remains to be an issue here in Canada as people have demanded his resignation or a byelection. There was a mock byelection that was supposed to put pressure on Emerson and the Conservatives to give in, which of cour...
SEPTEMBER 11th, 2006: 5 YEARS LATER Here is the transcript of Prime Minister Stephen Harper's speech yesterday: Good evening. Today is the 5th anniversary of the terrible events of September 11th, 2001. I am speaking to you from the Hall of Honour in the Centre Block of Parliament. With me are some Canadians whose lives have been touched by 9/11 in ways that most of us can't even begin to imagine. Men and women who lost loved ones in the attacks on the World Trade Centre. Tanja Tomasevic, who lost her husband, Vladimir; Danny Eisen who lost his cousin, Danny; and Maureen and Erica Basnicki, who lost their husband and father, Ken. I asked them to join me because words alone are not enough to express what needs to be said today. As we pay tribute to the 24 Canadians who lost their lives on that infamous day five years ago, their family members remind us that they were real people with real lives. Lives that were cut short - deliberately so - by a murderous act of terrorism. Like...
