WHAT DOES THE AMERICAN ELECTION MEAN FOR CANADA?

Say what you want about Americans, their leaders, and their relationships with the rest of the world but let's get one thing straight: what happens in the United States affects us in Canada in many ways. One of the things that many of us, as Canadians, define ourselves as is Not-American. And that is fine as long as you realize that we have a very strong relationship with them in many different ways. Our biggest tie to Americans would have to be economically as we do the majority of our international trade with them. So when the Americans elect a new president and government like they did on Nov. 4th we will see the effects here in Canada.

For now I am going to look at what the American election means for Canada from a political standpoint. The Americans shifted their government from a George Bush-led administration to a remarkable Barack Obama administration. This shift will take a couple of months as Obama's transition team gets to work on taking over everything Bush was in control of over the past 8 years. Less than a month prior to the American election on Nov. 4th here in Canada we had our own election and renewed Stephen Harper's Conservative minority government, this time even stronger.
Some people would incorrectly point out that having Obama elected as president, a major change from the Bush administration, would have negative impacts for Harper here in Canada. Harper may be a Conservative but that term has two very different meanings in Canada and in the United States. The truth is that if many of the Conservative MPs were politicians in the United States they would be Democrats or moderate Republicans. Throughout the American election campaign people inside the Conservative Party were hoping for Obama to win and believed it would be better for Canadian-American relations.

Also, the most significant impact on this election in regards to Harper's leadership is that his opposition have lost their major piece of ammunition against him. They can no longer compare him to Bush and say that he is turning Canada into the US. I am interested to see how Canadian-American relations progress from this and see the kind of relationship that Harper and Obama have.

BACK FROM ANOTHR HIATUS: OVERVIEW

It has been an atroceous three months since my last posting. I apologise for this and offer up no excuse for my absense from this place. I had final exams to worry about, and work of course but nothing that could have prevented me from posting a little more often then every three months. And now I'm two and a half months into a five month long summer with no reason not to do this so here I am. So what has happened since March 23rd that deserves honourable mention on my beloved post. Well the World Cup is currently entering the 2nd round of competition and I know what you might be thinking: who cares about soccer? It's a funny thing the World Cup, it is like nothing else. Even people who never watch or follow soccer of any form seem to find themselves entangled in the World Cup whenever it comes around. While it is the most popular sport in the entire world it is not as popular in North America where we're more focused on hockey, football, baseball, basketball, and golf. And...
BACK FROM MY RANTING HIATUS It's been awhile since the last time I posted a rant on here and for that I apologize. Of course there are reasons behind my procrastination. Spring break, lots of birthdays, school, and work have all thrown their hats at me in recent weeks but now I am back... and better than ever. Today's rant will not have a specific focus other than catching up for both you and I on Canada's and the rest of the world's events. And what a busy couple of weeks it has been. There have been numerous international, national, and provincial headlines that have caused some serious controversy, change, and reaction from all over. So I will not procrastinate any longer and get right into it. The David Emerson appointment and crossing of the floor still remains to be an issue here in Canada as people have demanded his resignation or a byelection. There was a mock byelection that was supposed to put pressure on Emerson and the Conservatives to give in, which of cour...
SEPTEMBER 11th, 2006: 5 YEARS LATER Here is the transcript of Prime Minister Stephen Harper's speech yesterday: Good evening. Today is the 5th anniversary of the terrible events of September 11th, 2001. I am speaking to you from the Hall of Honour in the Centre Block of Parliament. With me are some Canadians whose lives have been touched by 9/11 in ways that most of us can't even begin to imagine. Men and women who lost loved ones in the attacks on the World Trade Centre. Tanja Tomasevic, who lost her husband, Vladimir; Danny Eisen who lost his cousin, Danny; and Maureen and Erica Basnicki, who lost their husband and father, Ken. I asked them to join me because words alone are not enough to express what needs to be said today. As we pay tribute to the 24 Canadians who lost their lives on that infamous day five years ago, their family members remind us that they were real people with real lives. Lives that were cut short - deliberately so - by a murderous act of terrorism. Like...
